“Reducing Workplace Violence means Increasing Workplace Safety
through Positive Behavior Supports”
Training staff in “the prevention and use of restraint” is a requirement in all human service sectors. When organizations seek a program to provide the minimum amount of training needed to satisfy regulatory expectations, The Mandt System® is almost never chosen. Our focus is on doing more than the minimum required to keep people safe. Our approach to certifying staff in The Mandt System® is this: someone I love might need the services of the people I am training.” We seek, in our program, to help organizations to develop their staff, not just train them.
In a paper published in Psychiatry Online (http://ps.psychiatrionline.org September 2005 Vol. 56, No. 9, Janice LeBel, Ed.D. and Robert Goldstein, Ph.D., found that the average cost of one episode of physical restraint in their psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts was $302.03. Many organizations using The Mandt System have reported significant decreases in restraint, and some of those organizations have shared their data with us. While costs will vary in every organization, reducing the frequency, intensity, and duration of restraint, coupled with a restraint methodology that was intensively reviewed for safety by Dr. Chris Van Ee, a biomedical engineer, will provide a return on investment when The Mandt System is used to provide staff development and training.
Staff development requires an initial investment of funds, both for the program and for the time to train staff. The
question becomes “which program can provide our organization with the best “return on investment” for
the training dollars we will spend. The Australian Public Service Commission has focused on this question in the broad
sense, stating that “While a return on investment approach can be challenging for the public sector, it is an
important evaluation methodology. The Australian Public Service Commission, for example, has developed measures to assess
the outcomes of learning and development strategies and activities. Assessment is measured in terms of contribution towards
achieving organisational goals, return on investment and value for money.20

To measure the Return on investment (ROI) in The Mandt System® organizations must first understand what they want in terms of their Vision, their Mission, and their Values. We have put our Vision, Mission, and Values on our website. To measure ROI with any decision for choosing a vendor, there must be a sense of consistency and congruence between our organization and yours.
In designing our program, we ensured that the information provided met, at a minimum, all current regulations and accreditation standards from The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act, the Safe Schools Act, the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, Joint Commission, CARF, the Council on Accreditation (CoA), The Council (on Quality and Leadership), the American Correctional Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
Indicators of success must be developed by the organization to measure ROI. In the Corporate Culture Change workshop, the facilitator of the training will provide ideas for what organizations can measure, and work with the Quality Improvement/Enhancement staff to measure not just the absence of a negative (restraint, injury), but the presence of positive factors that can decrease workplace violence.
Organizations across the country have sent data to The Mandt System® demonstrating their ROI after implementing The Mandt System® as a staff development tool.
