“Reducing Workplace Violence means Increasing Workplace Safety
through Positive Behavior Supports”

The Mandt System® is often asked by state and private human service providers to respond to questionnaires regarding our program, as they compare The Mandt System® to other programs. A common question we are asked is to demonstrate our commitment to de-escalation as a primary response, instead of just using restraint.
De-escalation is not the primary goal of The Mandt System®. To reduce workplace violence, we need to help organizations prevent incidents from even occurring! For every hour that we teach restraint, we spend three hours on prevention and two hours on de-escalation. If we can prevent an interaction between people from becoming an incident, we have increased the safety of all staff and individuals served. We know that if staff are in relationships with other staff where dignity and respect between the staff are evident that individuals served feel safer. If staff feel and act safe with each other, then the people they serve are more likely to feel safe with the staff.
Following the three step model of Public Health of Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary interventions, our approach in The Mandt System® is:
- Keep interactions between people from escalating (prevent)
- Keep interactions from becoming incidents (redirect)
- Keep incidents from becoming a crisis (de-escalate)
If a crisis does occur, our focus is on maintaining the safety of all people. In order to “calm down” people must feel safe. If people do not feel safe, they will not calm down. Our program focuses first on building healthy relationships between staff at all levels of the organization, and then on being role models so the youth we serve can learn from us. They will learn much more from how we as staff behave towards each other and them than from what we teach in any curriculum.
