Course Description

The Technical Instruction addresses the uses of physical interaction, including the use of physical restraint. The possibility of physical aggression is discussed with an understanding that if physical aggression does occur, it is most likely the result of fear, frustration, anxiety or tension, and not a planned, calculated attack.

The Mandt System’s goal is for staff to become so good at nonphysical interactions that you do not need to use physical interactions. We want to help you eliminate the use of restraint altogether, if not at least reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of restraint use.

According to an independent evaluation, The Mandt System’s physical skills maintain as much safety as possible for both the individuals served and for staff.

Who We Serve
How long is the course?

New instructors will attend 4 days and those recertifying attend 2 days. The conceptual chapters are done after the face to face portion on-line.

How often must I recertify?

The certification is every two years for instructors. Certification is every year at the student level.

How many students can an instructor teach at one time?

All chapters that do not have any physical skills have a 1 instructor to 20 students ratio. Chapters with physical skills have a ratio of 1 instructor to 10 students.

Are all the skills restraint?

No, many of the skills are for support or to separate from someone.

Can we teach just the restraints?

No. Mandt is built upon a graded system of alternatives. Chapters 7 and 8 must be taught in order to teach Chapter 9 on restraints.

Can I take the technical skills if I am pregnant?

No one at Mandt is a medical doctor. We feel this is a decision that is left up to the individual and their medical doctor. Mandt will provide a medical doctor descriptions of the physical skills or do a video conference to show the skills so a medical doctor make their best determination. We would ask that a person with any type of high risk pregnancy not attend the training.

Do we have to teach all our staff technical skills?

No. Organizations must make this determination based on their needs and the regulatory statutes under which they are governed. Mandt will work with organizations to help assess who should be trained in technical skills and at what level.
